In recent years, the term #ReceptioGate has circulated across scholarly and informal platforms, often detached from verified sources. This article offers a documented reconstruction of the events that led to the smear campaign against Prof. Carla Rossi, philologist, manuscript scholar and director of the RECEPTIO Centre, after she formally reported cases of manuscript dismemberment to the Italian authorities.
The Organisation pour la Protection des Manuscrits Médiévaux (OProM) has reviewed the timeline and the documentation to provide an accurate record of what transpired between 2022 and 2025.
🗓 August 2022
Prof. Rossi files a formal report with the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (TPC), denouncing a network involved in the illicit acquisition, dismemberment, and sale of medieval illuminated manuscripts.
🗓 October 2022
The report is supplemented with a detailed legal memorandum, naming dealers and intermediaries active in the manuscript trade. The Italian authorities confirm receipt and initiate internal inquiries.
🗓 20 December 2022
Prof. Rossi publishes an open-access article on AboutArt Online presenting the core issues in manuscript dismemberment and referencing the complaint submitted to the TPC.🔗 Link to article
🗓 22–28 December 2022
Within days, a defamatory campaign begins:
Anonymous messages circulated via email from academic mailing lists.
False claims about the nonexistence of the RECEPTIO Centre.
Allegations of academic misconduct based on manipulated or decontextualized material.
🗓 26 December 2022
A Swiss online magazine (Kath.ch) publishes an article repeating defamatory claims. Following control by the Director of the online magazine, the article is removed.
🗓 January 2023
Falsified obituaries and a vandalized Wikipedia entry begin to circulate. The page is later protected by administrators.
🗓 May 2023–2024
Despite ongoing attacks, Prof. Rossi continues her academic work and publishes several monographs with Cambridge Scholars Publishing, including Isabelle Boursier’s Book of Hours and Digital Reconstruction of a Dismembered Book of Hours.

⚖️ Why this timeline matters
The ReceptioGate affair is not simply a case of defamation. It reflects the fragility of academic credibility in the digital age, the silence of institutions in the face of targeted attacks, and the need for robust ethical standards in manuscript research.
OProM will continue to publish analyses and documentation related to this case, in the interest of truth and cultural preservation.
