The case now known as ReceptioGate has revealed a coordinated network of defamatory attacks against a scholar known for her thirty years of philological research and her work on the dismemberment of illuminated manuscripts. Among the actors involved is an institution that should have defended academic research, yet actively contributed to the defamation—fostering hate on social media and triggering threats of death and physical violence: the Società Internazionale di Storia della Miniatura (Naples).
Between December 2022 and April 2023, at least four defamatory emails were circulated using the Society’s official mailing list. Despite being repeatedly informed, the president, Alessandra Perriccioli Saggese, took no legal or disciplinary action, failed to report the abuse, and did not protect members’ personal data, in violation of EU Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR).
This conduct constitutes not merely negligence but complicity in aggravated defamation, and raises serious concerns regarding institutional responsibility and academic ethics.
All of this is fully documented by Jordi Puig:📄 Institutional Complicity in the So-Called ReceptioGate Affair: 1. It is also worth noting that the Society’s official website includes direct links to antiquarian market operators, such as Günther Rare Books, alongside scholarly platforms such as e-codices and Enluminures. This is a clear indicator of conflicts of interest and a serious compromise of academic integrity.
