Is gender fluidity a modern concept? Not quite.
The project Intersexuality in Pictures in the Middle Ages (2021–2026), led by OProM and RECEPTIO, investigates how androgynous, intersex, and non-binary figures were represented in medieval manuscripts, theological texts, and visual culture.
Presented at Milano Pride 2024 and 2025, the project reveals how saints, Christ, and even God were envisioned beyond binary gender. Rather than being stigmatised, gender fluidity inspired powerful iconography:🕊 Christ as both mother and father🌈 Androgynous saints🌿 Non-binary mysticism and allegory
